walk 27: tower bridge to greenwich, with mathew hanratty

22 Oct

Northside | Start: 14:56 | End: 17:51 | Duration: 2.55 mins

Tower Bridge

Cool blue, like the day,

Tower Bridge floating above

the river – shining grey.

St Katherine's Dock

Inky water shows

my flickering image – and

ivy, like fingers.

Armless statue bare

breasted on a balcony –

Tomatoes in rows.

Wapping beach

Tiny streams run white

as they flow to the river –

Autumn is ending.

Wapping wharf

Towering wharf rose

from deserted riverbeds –

Boats dash pass in twos.

Algae on Wapping beach

Algae sheets a wall

hanging low like wet hair strands –

Smoky autumn smell.

leaf on Wapping beach

A man, walking by:

“There’s been another murder

down here.” Leaves scatter.

Hermitage in Wapping

Balconies curve up

like cupcake cases – insects

float by in the autumn dusk.

Rope on Isle of Dogs

Rope coiled in tight rows

roll to the walkers’ pavement –

shadows long beyond.

This walk was undertaken with Mathew Hanratty who took photographs while Gemma wrote haiku-like verse, using the traditional kengo (seasonal references) for autumn.

I think this is my favourite set of responses in the entire series. Well done Gemma and Mathew!
