This walk opens and closes with a swan.
Note the sense of anticipation in the air; rowers tug their boats to the river, a duck stretches its wings like a fan, and a distant drum beats. All of a sudden it changes. Here comes the blazing smell of a barbecue, trees rattling raucously and airplanes flying overhead in thunderous streams.
Take a step back and hear between these sounds. It’s an argument with him saying, I don’t know what I’m supposed to do. Whether you want me to eat or want me to diet. And her replying, I don’t want you to do anything, which the walker thinks is an unhelpful response.
It’s the footsteps of the walker who follows the air – warm, fragrant – along Chiswick Mall. It’s the cyclists pedaling alongside the river-facing front gardens. It’s the gate chime and the sign indicating the river pathway closes at dusk.
Watch now, the plot is about to thicken. Where do you learn things? One teenager on sucking ice cream, asks another. Horse riding, shit like that. And here’s the swan.
